After adopting nineteen orphaned children from around the world, Bonnie and Fred Cappuccino have gone on to provide homes, education, and vocational training for over six hundred more through the charity they founded, "Child Haven International". Eligible children are without parents or from socially disadvantaged situations and destitute, i.e. do not receive even one good meal a day. Bonnie and Fred have received several awards in recognition of their work, including the Order of Canada.
"Child Haven" is not a religious organization. In the four homes in
Child Haven provides full care through high school age, and then vocational training so that each child can enter the local society as a self-sufficient adult. Child Haven also strives to improve the condition of women through training, direct employment, and occasionally legal and medical aid.
